Carolina Century Inline Skate Bike Ride 2008 Report: 102 Leaf-Catching Miles

It's an idiotic compulsion of mine to buy new speedskate boots and skate 102 miles on them three weeks later. I love it so much I've done it twice: once in 2003 at Cruisin' in the Country in Claxton, Georgia, and once this past weekend in the smooth Piedmont of North Carolina at the first-ever Carolina Century to benefit MS. Other than earning myself a nice set of double-ankle-bones, I had an easier time skating for 10 hours than I had anticipated.

Inline Skate Frame Position: Friction and Burning Feet!

My skate frames have been in the wrong position all year!!! What an idiot. I finally felt like I had the time yesterday to tweak one of them and go for a spin. I set the right skate frame further inwards - where they had been all last year when I had no boot problems whatsoever - set off skating and got such great leverage off that right leg that I almost pushed myself over in the other direction.

Great British Rail Deals to London from the Southwest UK

My daughter wants to show her American friend some of the London sights, so we just went and bought our tickets in advance for tomorrow's journey. From the South West of England you can get a weekend deal for four adults at £20 each (I hope the pound sign showed up!), and two children between 5 and 15 years old for £1 each.

Quick Hi from Vacation in Poole, Dorset, England

I came back to my home County of Dorset, England, to help my parents celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. We haven't actually had the celebration yet, and hopefully we won't all kill each other before Saturday :-).

Calculating Calories Burned Hiking up Stone Mountain, Georgia

Some of you may remember me last year hashing to death the subject of 'calories burned per activity'. Well I'm still ruminating on it about once a month.

Interestingly enough while climbing the 700 or so feet up Georgia's granite lump, Stone Mountain, I was gasping for breath at the steeper section near the top. Feeling like I had just skated the US10K classic, I went to check my heart rate, expecting to see 168 or even over 170. Big shock: it was a mere 152 bpm!

Tour de Kale 2008, Denton, NC Bike Ride Inline Skate Review

Denton Farmpark, Denton, NC is becoming a home away from home for me every June. Hundreds of cyclists and a skater or three met at the park out in the country to honor Kale's superbly supported charity ride last Saturday, June 21st 2008. Let me tell you, the Denton folk know how to mix gatorade at the rest stops! Not a watered-down barrell out there.

Athens to Atlanta Roadskate (A2A Skate): Total Ascent, Elevation Gain; Barometric or GPS Data?

Does anybody have the total ascent or elevation gain for the 87 mile Athens-to-Atlanta (A2A) course kicking around somewhere in their GPS or training files? I have googled all sorts of term combos, as well as searched this site. Blake's A2A mapmyride entry shows highest & lowest elevation but doesn't add it up for me :-). I'm feeling a bit fuzzy headed today so it's entirely possible I overlooked it, but please post that figure if you have it!

Great Atlanta Night Skate Video

Here's a freshly uploaded video taken by Aprr Rick during another Aprr skater's 40th Birthday nightskate. I think it's better muted, but it's enjoyable either way.

Ice Skating Treadmill; Plus OK Go "Here It Goes Again" Music Video

Thanks to a skating newsletter from Londonskaters Mike, here's a link to a video about Cornell University's ice hockey training 'treadmill'. Huh? How'd they get the ice to wrap around like that? ;-)

I wonder why they need a harness to skate uphill? And sure, pavement/wheel friction complicates things, but a pair of inlines plus a hill would probably be cheaper.
