Athens to Atlanta Roadskate 2007 - Black Holes and Revelations!

I'm referring to the Muse song "Starlight". Several phrases of the song seem to fit my A2A experience this year, with the Black Holes being the painful gaps in the Gatorback pavement along Dekalb Avenue around mile 82. And the revelations? Well...

I don't care who you are - A2A will kick your butt! It will raise your hopes and expectations, and then punch you in the gut. It's everybody's race, it's nobody's race. We all want to win it, but most of us won't. Fantastic! I love it!

Rainy Berlin WIC Photo

What a great place for a finish line! With Berlin's Brandenburg Gate in the background, I'm assuming they're on Unter den Linden. Last time I was on that street there was a big, ugly wall cutting it in half - profanely colorful on one side (West) and stiflingly bland on the other (East). Good to see a previously fractured site now the setting for joyous play...or is it fierce battle? :-)

NYC Skate Marathon 2007 - New York 100k Photos 2007: purple roadskater!

Ok I know it's silly, but I'm hungry for news & photos here, of this past weekend's NYC Skate Marathon & 100K. I was looking at Shaloheat's pics and see a purple roadskater.net at the start line, maybe Bethany, or Julie? Not sure who...

I heard Marcia got 3rd women's overall in the 100K! Go Marcia!

ZDF Inlinerdays 2007, Mainz, Germany - Backwards Skating 10K World Record set

Picking on the Germans again. They are doing a heck of a lot in Germany to promote skating. Thanks to Peter Doucet's http://www.speedskateworld.com/ for pointing me over to the latest WIC photos. The 30k speed race took place this past weekend at my old hang-out: Mainz, Germany.

Inline Skating Hill-Training Progression

To follow up on my previous post, earlier in the summer, after I had started my hill training for T2T and A2A (Tour de Kale and Tour de Lions too, for that matter!), here are my conclusions about how I should expect my hill training to progress, based on training, performance and perception this year.

Recollections of Tour to Tanglewood 2007

Tour to Tanglewood was a blast this year. Full of friends, skating, tornadoes, sun, hills, cookies, purple, wind, missing luggage, canceled flights, and gloriously bad singing.

After the 6 Tour to Tanglewoods I have been fortunate enough to skate in, the whole gathering to me is starting to resemble a huge family of 1,500, and growing every year. Each part of the weekend brings its own joy:

Push Through your Plateau

There are some interesting posts on www.pickthebrain.com, offering advice from a feelings-to-common-sense perspective. One article entitled 8 Moves to Make When you Feel Like Giving up, mentions hitting a plateau:

"In some cases you might feel like giving up even though you’re doing all the right things. This is called “the dip” — the plateau that separates the average from the best in the world"

Tour to Tanglewood 2007 Clemmons Bicycle Training Ride

This past Saturday's Tour to Tanglewood training ride was hosted by Clemmons Bicycle. As in previous years, the route was beautiful, hilly with great pavement, limited congestion and a couple of fun, long downhills (Darwick Road and Fraternity Church Road).

Hard-to-Find Rollerblade ABT-Lite Brake Available at Sun & Ski Sports, Discover Mills, GA

Funny how things work out sometimes. I spent too much time this weekend agonizing over which shipping fees to pay when buying some replacement hard-to-find Rollerblade ABT-Lite brake pads for my speed skate brake set up ($5 makes a lot of difference to me right now). I ended up not buying any. No real, physical sporting goods stores I've visited over the past 2 years stocked these, that I could see.

Chris Carmichael & Lance Armstrong's Cycling Hill-Training Adapted for Skate Training

Before I explain the workout, I wanted to explain my reason for trying this: to get better at hill climbing!

The Secret to Weight Loss and Maintaining Your Target Weight

Whilst snooping around the personal finance and get-out-of-debt blogs, I tapped into the personal weight-loss blogs. In following the ADHD links to the maze of other such webpages, I found some funny blog titles, like "Over 40, in debt and overweight". Yes, in 2007 there are countless people still struggling in vain to lose excess weight. They all seem to believe that food deprivation and other people's idea of exercise are the only solutions. Will this hopelessly cruel and debilitating cycle ever end?

A Liberating Nutritional Program for Athletes (Diet Exercise Weight Loss)

I hesitate to use the four-letter word 'diet' here, as that connotates restriction, sacrifice and misery. I also hesitate to call myself an athlete! However, in this bodyweight equation and given the unusually high number of skate-training hours, let the athlete = EB.
