Roadskater.net Photos Revolved: Faster, Better, Fetching Views of the People, Days and Places That Brightened My Life

A few years ago I had to shake things up as the old joys were no more....at least for a while. Thanks to three lovely young skater friendgirls, I started skating, and it turned out I was quickly more addicted than they were.  The Year of Skating Dangerously saved my joy. To honor that time, I present: http://roadskater.net/rsn/photos/index.htm .

I was looking to create something other than what I had tried before, which had all dried up. So I bought a cheap digital camera and decided I would take photos and edit them and post them mostly without comment (hard for me!). The collection grew to 31,000 photos! Before September 11, airline flights were cheaper than the gasoline to drive some places. I had free places to land on floors. I went. I took photos. I edited them.

Joy Revisited: Skating the Silver Comet Trail

So many times as an adult I have longed for the joy I felt during childhood. At times I find life as an adult to be a challenge as my own fears collect and hinder over time like pine straw in a skate brake!

How to recapture the giddy hysteria of childhood antics without the aid of mood-altering pharmaceuticals?! Should I go back to Bournemouth and find a white/blonde-haired kid with which to play hide and seek in the bleached stucco stair wells of the grand houses near the Winter Gardens? One of my sisters might oblige these days but they'd secretly think I was just a sad remnant of a previously well-adjusted person. I could say hang it all and move to the beach...any beach...and hope to recapture the magic of simply standing on the sand, enthralled for hours by the sun-sparkles on the water surface.

Skating the Full Silver Comet and Chief Ladiga Trail Again: 94 Miles of Hot Fun in Georgia and Alabama

Driving down from North Carolina late at night, I asked eebee to post a note to the APRR (Atlanta Peachtree Road Rollers) list inviting people to join us for a long slow distance skate the next day, or perhaps the day after. We had earlier this year done our favorite 62-miler from Mile 0 near Nickajack Elementary School to mile 31 at Brushy Mountain Tunnel and back.

Inline Skating 62 miles on the Silver Comet Trail: Rollerblading 100K (Metric Century) on Rail Trail to Brushy Mountain Tunnel

After some celebrations earlier in the week and some skating (including one day that was slow and not such great fun due to some exhaustion and burnout), we decided to get some rest and plan a long day out on the Silver Comet Trail outside Atlanta, near Smyrna, GA. We put out the word late as usual, and got regrets from TomB and JonK but had our plan and perhaps some company.

Photos and Maps from 95-Mile Inline Skate on Silver Comet Trail and Chief Ladiga Trail: Smyrna, GA to Anniston, Alabama

I've just finished and uploaded 835 or so photos of our 95-mile excursion from July 4, 2009. The vast majority of the route was railtrail, with some exceptions we noted elsewhere on the site. Perhaps more comments on the photos later. For now, here's the link... http://roadskater.net/photos/silver-comet-chief-ladiga-trail-inline-skat... The 3D thumbnail map lets you see smaller versions of the photos where they were taken on a Google Earth map (requires Google Earth from earth.google.com)...

95 Miles: Smyrna, GA to Anniston, AL on the Silver Comet & Chief Ladiga Trails

The whole sick story started July 3rd, at about 9 pm after Blake had emailed the Atlanta skaters (aprr) list to ask if anybody wanted to skate the entire 95 mile trail with us, and be able to provide a ride back to Atlanta. He was going to give up on the idea at 11pm and told me at 10.52pm that I had eight minutes, then would be off the hook. Then Tom called. He could skate with us and his wife would pick us up at Anniston. Tom and his family came up to Greensboro last Fall so that he could skate the Carolina Century - pretty much the whole way with Skatey-Mark.

Inline Skating 44 Miles on the Silver Comet Trail (Slowly). How About Your Recent Workouts?

No matter how far or not, how fast or not, I love to hear people's stories of skating. Ten words or a hundred paragraphs, tell us what you've been skating, cycling, lifting, or anything. Or just tell me what's up lately. So here's my freewriting exercise. I'll try to type it out once and not do editing other than spelling and such... Well, eebee and I went out for a long skate today, thinking we would do about 30 or 32 miles. She's been training to skate and I've been training to type, read, watch p2p tv of sporting events, so you can imagine who had the lower heart rate, ha!

Silver Comet Skate/Ride on Memorial Day 2007

From: Huston Sent: Monday, May 21, 2007 3:12:02 PM Dave/Barry, thanks for the update. I was going to check out the road section on the Covenant Christian Century on Sat., but a big dog rudely jumped in front of me before I got there. I had no choice but to hit him, which propelled me over the handlebars & onto the pavement. So I spent the rest of the day at Floyd General being treated for a broken collarbone & rib. So no skating, cycling or dancing for me. So, I'm entertaining offers for my registration. Huston
