Roadskater.net Photos Revolved: Faster, Better, Fetching Views of the People, Days and Places That Brightened My Life

A few years ago I had to shake things up as the old joys were no more....at least for a while. Thanks to three lovely young skater friendgirls, I started skating, and it turned out I was quickly more addicted than they were.  The Year of Skating Dangerously saved my joy. To honor that time, I present: http://roadskater.net/rsn/photos/index.htm .

I was looking to create something other than what I had tried before, which had all dried up. So I bought a cheap digital camera and decided I would take photos and edit them and post them mostly without comment (hard for me!). The collection grew to 31,000 photos! Before September 11, airline flights were cheaper than the gasoline to drive some places. I had free places to land on floors. I went. I took photos. I edited them.

Measuring jerseys

Related to current jersey issues, I got some jerseys from the closet and found a tape measure and checked some dimensions. It's a bit iffy measuring the Roadskater jerseys because of the double seams on each size (but that's part of what makes them supersweet, right?) but I did my best. Blake thought this information might perhaps be useful to someone some day.

Green 2006 jersey size XL: about 24" across chest just below sleeves

Iris/violet 2007 jersey size XL: about 24"

Orange 2008 jersey size XL: almost 25"

Roadskater.net Jersey Photo Mosaic Graphic for Your Inline Skate Boots, Frame, Helmet

I was looking for some trim for my skate frame and after so much time working on boots I decided just to make a photo mosaic of the three jerseys in skatesky, sunleaves and roadviolets. I wanted a flag-waving effect, so i took photos of the jerseys outside hanging vertically instead of smoothed out lying flat. The warping and imperfections were what I wanted, as repeated imperfections still have a pattern, but to me a more interesting one. These are the top-left edge versions, but I made some others that made full, even rows, too. Let me know via email if you want any of that.

Ironman, the Melodrama: A Diabetic Brother, Oprah Winfrey, a Herniated Disc & an Ironman Challenge

A few distant friends asked why I quit inline racing. To make a short story long, below is the answer.

Ironman the Journey

I looked at the freshly opened gel pack: is it gonna make me puke or save me from meltdown? My lower back ached at mile 7. 19.2 miles go to. This Ironman thing was hard.

"Midlife Crisis. I can't afford a Porsche."

"Lost a bet."

"Can't find Tour de France on active.com."

Stained Glass Colors and Churches in Prague

Rambling blogging and reminiscences follow, mostly triggered by Blake's comment on stained glass colors. It got me thinking of the glass in St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague, begun in the 14th century but not completed for almost 600 years.

Further Proof: Exercise Irons out Brain Kinks

Despondency + skating = hope. Hope makes all the difference!

Ever since I got hooked on inline skating in 1999, I have known this: if I had, as a teenager, discovered this sport, or something else I adored as much, that called for about ten hours of intense activity a week, I would have been depressed a whole lot less.

Minutes of CIC FIRS Meeting Show Efforts for Olympics, World Games

Minutes from last September's CIC Meeting show the efforts made by FIRS (International Roller Sports Federation) to get roller (inline) speed skating into the Olympic program. It is clear the CIC and FIRS representatives felt angry and perhaps misled about the opportunity...

Floyd Landis Defense Fund and Multiple Sclerosis Donation Link

Not much new here except the information that there is now a way to contribute to Floyd's defense. What would really be interesting would be if they would sell stock in the defense so that if he loses, you lose, but if he wins, you win too! Now that would really be an educational lottery!

Rollerblading in Gay Paris, Tennessee Williams, Golden Panthers, Electric Smile

Now and then...OK every day...I'm transported back to moments...this time standing by the stacks in the library in grad school, reading the diaries of Tennessee Williams.

I had an assignment to find out where Tennessee Williams and Eugene O'Neill were and what they were doing the night Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman opened on Broadway. (I think that was it, or something close; a great assignment that led me to the microfiche of the New York Times Broadway ads and much more.) Have I written about this lately or just thought of it? Never mind.

United Parcel Service UPS Packages Spend Christmas in the Twilight Zone

The saga began early in the week before Christmas. I had decided to avoid the stores mostly and do most of my shopping online. That was mostly a great decision I decided after going out to the stores later in the week. It was mostly a good idea except for a couple of crucial mistakes.
